Balancing Ball

This guy can’t participate in the volleyball tournaments, but he sure can balance the souvenir ball that they tossed out at one of the games. This ball is actually balancing on the finger–not taped or propped up in any way, and no Photoshop trickery.

Lisa Pin

This lapel pin was a promotional trinket I received when I was working at an Apple store in 1983 when the Lisa was first introduced. For those of you not familiar with Lisa, it was the $10,000 predecessor to the first Macintosh. Yes, I am that old, and yes, I have been a Mac user that long.

Wiring Closet

Our house was built just before WiFi really took off, and it’s fully wired with Ethernet jacks in every room. This is a shot from the wiring closet, a small room in the basement with several server machines, a UPS, a business phone system, and tons of Cat5e cable. This is what happens when an engineer gets involved with the house design.

Film Reel

This is a wide-angle shot of an old 35mm film reel, taken in front of a large softbox strobe (used for the high-key backlight) with two other strobes to highlight the foreground. The resulting image was then “aged” by adding a sepia tone filter.

Fiber Space

This faux space shot is a combination of fiber optics and a little Photoshop layering to combine the red and blue frames, each shot separately.

Signed Ball

Once again, finding myself totally out of ideas for the daily photo, I grab the macro lens and head for the basement to rummage through the junk drawer looking for interesting subjects. I found this baseball, signed by Harmon Killebrew, who I met at an HP product release event back in 1992. Mr. Killebrew was the guest of honor because the internal code name for the product was “Killebrew.” The name was chosen because Mr. Killebrew was born in Payette, Idaho, and Payette was the code name for a related product. Anyway, he signed the ball right in front of me, and someday it may be worth a few bucks on eBay. :-)
